Summary

Vinod Krishnan is a Chennai-born, U.S.-based Carnatic singer, composer, producer, and educator whose work lives at the intersection of five centuries of South Indian classical tradition and the global contemporary sound.

Trained from age four under two of India's most decorated gurus, he has performed everywhere from NRG Stadium in Houston to the United Nations General Assembly Hall — while his viral productions, from the "Shape of You" Carnatic Mix to EDM Thillanas, have amassed tens of millions of views.

As Creative Director for Music at IndianRaga, he is equally devoted to building the next generation of artists and listeners.

Background

Roots in Chennai, reach across the world.

Born and raised in Chennai — the cultural capital of South Indian classical music — Vinod began learning Carnatic music at the age of four. His formative training was under under Padma Shri Neyveli R. Santhanagopalan, and advanced training with Padma Bhushan Madurai T.N. Seshagopalan, one of the most revered vocalists of the modern era.

He held a CCRT National Scholarship for eight consecutive years and earned a Trinity College of Music (London) keyboard certification.

Musical Training & Philosophy

Tradition as a living language.

"They all share the same seven notes; only the treatment differs at the basic level."

— Vinod Krishnan, on fusing Carnatic tradition with contemporary genres

This philosophy — that the foundational notes of Carnatic music are not a boundary but a shared vocabulary — has driven Vinod's most celebrated work: Carnatic a cappella, EDM thillanas, jazz lullabies, and mashups that treat every genre as a dialect of the same musical language.
